Gregory A. Scovel

Special Agent Gregory A. Scovel was born in Kodiak, Alaska.
In 1976 he graduated from the University of San Diego with a baccalaureate
degree in Political Science, and subsequently completed graduate work in
International Studies at Old Dominion University.
In 1978 Special Agent Scovel graduated from the Naval
Investigative Service Academy and took his first assignment with NIS in
Newport, Rhode Island.
In 1981 he was one of two agents assigned to NCIS Resident
Unit Gaeta, Italy, providing support to Commander, Sixth Fleet (COMSIXTHFLT).
While deployed with COMSIXTHFLT, he operated in Beirut during the Lebanese
crisis. In 1985, he became Special Assistant to the Regional Director of
Operations, NIS Regional Office, London, providing direct support to the
Commander in Chief, U.S. Naval Forces Europe (CINCUSNAVEUR). In the summer
of 1985 he received a commission in the United States Naval Reserve as
an Intelligence Officer and graduated from the Navy and Marine Corps Intelligence
Training Center Basic Intelligence School in 1986.
In 1986 Special Agent Scovel transferred to NCIS Resident
Agency Norfolk, Virginia, to assume the duties of Assistant Special Agent
in Charge for Foreign Counterintelligence. In 1988 he was assigned to NIS
Little Creek, Virginia, as Special Agent in Charge (SAC); in 1991 he became
the Operations Officer for the NCIS Atlantic Command.
In 1992 Special Agent Scovel assumed the duties as SAC,
NCISRA Naples, Italy. After the reorganization of NCIS in 1994, he was
designated the Assistant Agent in Charge of the NCIS European Field Office,
where he ran the counterintelligence program for Europe and the Middle
East. In 1996 he was transferred to NCISHQ as the Deputy Assistant Director
for Technical Services, with a follow-on tour as the SAC of the NCIS Washington
Field Office. In 2000 he attended the National Security Management Course
at Syracuse University and was subsequently detailed to the USS Cole Commission.
In 2001 he was appointed as the first Executive Assistant Director for
Criminal Investigations at NCISHQ, followed by an assignment as the Executive
Assistant Director for Counterintelligence. In November 2007 he was selected
for his current assignment as Deputy Director for Operations. Special Agent Scovel is also currently serving as Director (Acting) for NCIS.
He was awarded the Navy Meritorious Civilian Award in
1994, and the Defense Exceptional Civilian Service Award in 2001. In 2003
Special Agent Scovel became a member of the Senior Executive Service.
