NCIS Headquarters
NCIS Headquarters is located in southeast
Washington DC, on the west bank of the Anacostia River, aboard
the historic Washington Navy Yard. As the center of operations
for the entire spectrum of the NCIS mission, Headquarters
oversees all of the field offices and their subordinate components.
Established in 1799, and placed on the National
Register of Historic Places in 1973, the Washington Navy Yard
has a remarkably rich history. In 1803 Thomas Jefferson designated
the Washington Navy Yard as the home port for the U.S. Navy,
and it remained the United States’ primary Navy facility
until 1815. Additionally, the Washington Navy Yard has been
the site of many noteworthy events, having served as the debarkation
point for Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh when he returned from
the first transatlantic flight in 1927, and as the port for
the presidential yacht since the Theodore Roosevelt administration.
